Over the next several weeks we’ll be doing case study presentations, details below:
Some advice on giving talks: here.
I have updated office hours appointments to be 15 minutes rather than 30 to allow for more slots; there will usually be time to go over a bit if needed.
Important: Instructions about the final paper milestones and what is expected have been updated below, in both the Assignments & Grading section and are visible in the Final Project Deadlines view or the Calendar view (may be easier to see how they are timed with everything else). The first is due Tuesday, March 7.
The TA is Venesa Rugova ([email protected]) — please contact her for questions about course logistics going forward.
I would encourage everyone to take a look at the events calendar of the Columbia Data Science Institute and try going to a talk or an event; it is ok if a talk seems “too technical” — I guarantee you will get things out of any of these, and more and more as the semester proceeds. This is a university-wide institute that also often works with NYC and other governments.
The first lecture will be Tuesday, January 17, 2:10-4 PM in IAB 411.
Welcome to INAF U6545, Spring 2023 at Columbia’s School of International & Public Affairs.
<aside> 👉 Each reading will be flagged with a comment about how much to read. In general, the course aims to give a broad overview, so most of the references below are not intended to be read in full detail. Do not get unnecessarily concerned by the number of papers listed each week. These include, for example, [full] if intended to be read in full, [skim] if intended to quickly skim to get the gist (an important skill), [optional] if optional, or [intro, section 2] if only those sections should be read.

<aside> ⚠️ The full set of readings are posted for the entire semester, but note that any readings in future weeks are subject to change. The assignments will be posted each week, i.e., not all in advance. Each week, you will do the readings and the assignment. Written assignments must be submitted in PDF format on Courseworks. The due date will be indicated each week but will usually be a day or two before the next class.
